Health & Wellbeing

We all know that good health and wellbeing are fundamental to the quality of our lives and increase life expectancy.

We are Seriously Social about Health & Wellbeing and are committed to working with NHS and healthcare providers to improve referral routes and outcomes. We also work with range of Community Partners who play a significant part in our work.

Tackling health inequalities, reducing the financial burden on the NHS through preventative and rehabilitation services, improving whole community health and taking a person-centred approach to health is the core of what Charitable Trusts do.

Here are a few examples of what we offer:

We operate a highly successful Referral Programme and Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme.

Through a combination of prescribed exercise and lifestyle and dietary advice the 12 week Referral Programme aims to assist individuals to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and improve their health.

Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed to restore heart patients to an optimum level of physical and mental wellbeing. It requires patients to assume responsibility for their own health and to realise their potential to lead an active life.  Find out more

Community

A community-centred approach to health and wellbeing starts at the very top in Charitable Trusts.

We routinely work alongside community groups, healthcare professionals, local businesses and other charitable organisations to create social good. Porchlight is our current Charity of the Year.

A healthy relationship with our Local Authority is also key, supporting them to achieve our outcomes.

Our Board of 11 voluntary Trustees comprises of local people and politicians. Involving and empowering communities is at the front of our thinking. They bring with them an impressive range of experience and knowledge from a variety of sectors, including accountancy, education, business, human resources and IT. The Board works with the Chief Executive and the executive management team to make strategic policy and planning decisions and to guide the organisation. Meet our Trustees

Here’s why they do it:

Trustee – Simon White

“As a trustee for tmactive, I am committed to the promotion of wellbeing through accessible and enriching recreational opportunities. I am a firm believer in the positive effect that these recreational opportunities, and the fundamental way they support an active lifestyle, have on individuals and communities.”

Trustee – Vidhya Ratnam

“I believe our community recreational centre has an important role to play in promoting physical and mental health, reducing juvenile crime rates and promoting community spirit. It has been stitched into the fabric of our own family over the years – children’s classes, birthdays, community events and even covid vaccinations. It is indeed the heart of our community.”

Staff Trustee – Kim Bennett

“I am incredibly proud to serve as the staff trustee for tmactive. Witnessing firsthand the positive impact of our accessible community activities is truly inspiring. It’s amazing to see the social interactions and friendships that flourish while people stay active. Having a voice in the management of our community programs is deeply rewarding, especially knowing how much it enhances well-being and mental health.”

tmactive150 is our community programme, designed to encourage and help local people achieve 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.

The programme is part of our outreach and reach-out work, addressing issues and barriers that may prevent local people from participating and enjoying physical activity. Find out more

We have partnered with Porchlight, the Kent-based homelessness, housing and mental health charity. By appointing Porchlight as our Charity of the Year, tmactive reaffirms its commitment to supporting and raising awareness of the essential services provided by the charity in Tonbridge and Malling.

Porchlight helps people who are facing homelessness. It also tackles the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality, so they can recover from the trauma they’ve experienced and live the life they want. Find out more

Seriously Social About Inclusion

Embracing everyone’s unique qualities and making sure everyone is treated fairly and supported in their community is at the heart of who we are.

We are committed to serving the entire community. We recognise that those who face social exclusion or barriers, such as poverty, disability or geography often experience poorer health outcomes. That’s why we are dedicated to providing opportunities for everyone to lead healthier lives.

Seriously Social About Employment & Skills

We are committed to the creation of pathways into employment and developing new skills including through apprenticeship programmes and volunteering.

Don’t Take our word for it,  Find out why our employees love their jobs:

“I love my job because of my colleagues and the family atmosphere here at Tonbridge Swimming Pool.

The Trust has allowed me to progress in the industry – from a lifeguard to team leader and now into management.

It’s great to see our young customers move through the Swim School stages and then come in with their family to enjoy a leisure swim.”

“I love my job because I enjoy interacting with people and getting to know our customers on a first name basis. I also enjoy working with all my colleagues and have made some true friends. It’s a fun place to work!

The Trust has given me the opportunity to complete the Pool Plant Operators Course which has allowed me to develop within my role and step up as a Duty Manager.”

“As Chief Executive of the Trust, I hold overall responsibility for the strategic direction, financial and operational performance of the organisation. I report to the Board of Trustees, liaise with the Borough Council (TMBC) and am responsible for an annual budget of circa £10m.

My job is hard work, challenging, diverse and rewarding. However, I started my career at Larkfield Leisure Centre in 1981 as one of the original Recreation Assistant team. I was appointed through my abiding love of sport and swim/lifeguarding skills rather than any formal academic qualifications and progressed through Duty Manager and Assistant Manager roles to become the Centre Manager in 1989. I went on to become TMBC’s Leisure Contracts Manager overseeing all its indoor leisure facilities and completed a Masters in Business Adminstration (MBA) despite not holding a first degree. Latterly in 2013 I led the outsourcing of the Council’s leisure operation to the Trust as Chief Executive, my current role.

In summary – if I can do it, so can you.”
