Commitment to Sustainability

Embracing a Sustainable Future
At tmactive, we’re committed to sustainable practices that not only reduce our environmental impact but also support biodiversity and promote a healthier future for our communities. Across all of our leisure facilities, we’re embedding green thinking into everything we do.
This includes sourcing locally wherever possible, providing clearly marked recycling bins and food waste separation at our facilities, and delivering Carbon Literacy Training to staff to ensure sustainability is embedded at every level of our operations.
From innovative carbon-saving technology and eco-friendly upgrades to greener energy solutions and nature-focused projects, we’ve made great progress and we’re proud to share the key initiatives shaping a more sustainable future.

Larkfield Leisure Centre
As part of our long-term sustainability goals, Larkfield Leisure Centre is undergoing a major £1.6 million environmental upgrade, thanks to significant investment from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and support from external grants. These works will deliver state-of-the-art carbon-reducing technology designed to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency throughout the centre.
In 2023, TMBC installed 190 solar panels on the sports hall roof to harness renewable energy and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources. Building on this success, in 2025 the Council installed an additional 270 solar panels, further boosting on-site energy generation. This latest phase also included enhanced roof insulation to reduce heat loss and improve overall building performance.
Key initiatives include:
- 460 solar panels installed
- Planned installation of a new Air Source Heat Pump
- LED and motion sensor lighting
- No Mow May
Angel Centre
Despite the limitations of an older building, we’re making meaningful upgrades at Angel Centre to reduce our environmental impact and improve long-term efficiency. Each change plays a part in creating a more sustainable and resilient facility.
Motion sensor lighting, programmable controls in the gym and dance studios, and energy-efficient LED fixtures are in place to reduce electricity use, cut waste, and lower running costs – all while maintaining a high-quality experience for users.
To conserve water and energy, we’ve added cistern flush controls, waterless urinals, percussion taps, and sensor-activated hand dryers. We’ve also introduced accurate dispensing systems for cleaning and hygiene products, helping to reduce excess use and minimise environmental impact.
Key initiatives include:
- Water saving upgrades
- LED & motion sensor lighting
- Chemical auto-dosing
- Energy-saving controls
- No Mow May
Tonbridge Swimming Pool
In 2024, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council installed on-site electrolytic chlorination at Tonbridge Swimming Pool – a forward-thinking solution that enhances safety, ensures consistently clean water, and significantly reduces environmental impact. This system eliminates the need for bulk chemical deliveries, cutting associated emissions and improving on-site sustainability.
That same year, the centre also took a major step forward with the installation of solar panels, further supporting the Council’s drive toward carbon neutrality by 2030. By generating clean, renewable energy on-site, the panels reduce the pool’s carbon footprint while playing a vital role in tackling the climate emergency.
At Tonbridge Swimming Pool, these innovations demonstrate a clear commitment to safer, greener, and more efficient operations.
Key initiatives include:
- On-site Electrochlorination (OSEC)
- Installation of 180 solar panels
- Reduction in chemicals
- LED & motion sensor lighting
- Eco-friendly tea sold in our Refuel Cafe
- No Mow May
Leybourne Lakes Country Park
At Leybourne Lakes, nature and sustainability go hand in hand. In July 2022, we opened our eco café in partnership with Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council – a welcoming space that features innovative low-carbon technology and sets a new standard for environmentally responsible design.
Across the wider park, we’re committed to managing the landscape in a way that supports biodiversity and minimises environmental impact. Selected areas are now left unmowed to encourage wildflower growth and provide vital habitats for pollinators and other local wildlife. Cutting and collection follow traditional meadow management practices, which help maintain healthy, species-rich grasslands.
We’re also transitioning away from petrol-powered, two-stroke tools in favour of electric alternatives, reducing both air pollution and energy consumption during day-to-day operations. Our on-site Kubota work vehicle has switched to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a cleaner-burning alternative to conventional diesel that significantly lowers carbon emissions.
Key initiatives include:
- Lake Heat Source Pump
- Solar panels to heat eco cafe
- Wildflower areas & No Mow May
- Work vehicle runs on HVO
- Electric tools transition
- Certified compostable dog poop bags on site
- Eco-friendly tea sold in our Refuel Cafe
Poult Wood Golf Course
Sustainability is at the heart of how we manage Poult Wood Golf Course. From environmentally sensitive course maintenance and responsible water management to nature-friendly landscaping that supports local wildlife, we’re committed to balancing quality play with ecological care.
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is upgrading the conservatory and building windows at the clubhouse, helping to cut heat loss by up to 30% – a key step toward improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Funding has also been secured for the installation of an energy-efficient pump to further cut carbon emissions across the site.
In addition, the golf course has transitioned to using GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) fuel – a cleaner-burning alternative to red diesel. Made from natural gas, GTL produces significantly lower emissions, supporting a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to grounds maintenance.
Our environmental efforts also extend to biodiversity. Recently coppiced areas now feature log stacks, which provide valuable habitats for insects and small rodents, enhancing the site’s natural ecosystem.
Key initiatives include:
- Air source heat pump planned installation
- Glazing upgrade
- Upgraded power tools
- Electric works vehicle
- Switch to Shell GTL fuel
- Unmown rough & bug hotels
- LED lighting in Clubhouse
Recycling just got Easier
We’ve made recycling easier and more effective with Simpler Recycling. By separating plastics, paper, glass, metal, and food waste, you’re helping to reduce landfill, lower carbon emissions, and protect our environment.
Every item you recycle at our centres plays a part in conserving valuable resources and building a cleaner, greener community for future generations.
